Chapter Eight

Kyle

A week ago, if someone had told him that there would be a day, soon, when Hadley Lewis wouldn’t be his priority, he would have laughed to their face; now, he’d recalled that an awful lot of things mattered at least as much as his mate.

The girl had woken up by the next day; her wounds had already healed, so physically, she looked fine, except for her hollow, absent gaze.

She said her name was Serena. She gave the name of her pack – Winter Gates, a well-respected southern pack, and she also confirmed that her attacker hadn’t been part of them.

All of it, she said by writing it in a little book, with trembling hands. She’d attempted to, but she just couldn’t bring herself to open her mouth. When he’d asked if she wanted to go back home, the frantic shake of her head made him understand that he only had part of the story.

He had to thank her, because her impromptu arrival had reminded him that the world still carried on, that people still had problems, and that he had to stop being a completely self-absorbed prick, not for Hadley, but for his own personal growth.

He got ready for the assembly. He was going to go there and make alliances. He was going to get invested in the issues their territory faced. Yes, he’d also ask about Hadley – but even if he never saw her again, this shitty year wouldn’t end without him changing into a better person.

His wolf somehow got behind that. He liked the idea of protecting a larger crowd, of becoming invested. It definitely liked the idea of tracking down whomever had hurt Serena and shred him apart. They had his scent, and he would hunt him like the animal he was.

“Ready?”

He wasn’t. He was anxious, and restless, as per his default state these days, but Kyle just nodded, closing before getting behind the driving seat of his car, preparing for the long-ass drive.
